Frugal Valentine’s Day Ideas

With the economy tight, everyone is looking for more cost-effective ways to celebrate holidays and Valentine’s Day is no exception.  There are plenty of ways to celebrate your love for each other without making large donations to Hallmark (Americans spent $17 Billion on the holiday in 2008).  The possibilities are endless, but here are a few to get your mind rolling:

  • The good old-fashioned homemade card.  A card you make yourself takes more effort and can be more appreciated than one that took a few minutes grabbing at a store.
  • A home-cooked candlelight dinner.  Spaghetti is inexpensive, but it can also be romantic with the right lighting.  Your kid might even enjoy being a waiter for the evening!
  • Decorate a box and fill it with leftover Halloween candy.  No, it’s not chocolate, but it’s still sweets for your sweet. You could even dust off the cookie sheet and fill the box with some homemade cookies.
  • Grab a tent and hit a campsite.  Or if it’s too cold in your area of the country, make a tent in your living room with some kitchen chairs and a blanket.
  • Use the VCR to record a movie that’s on TV that you’d both enjoy. Pop some popcorn, turn down the lights, and enjoy your own private movie theatre.
  • Take a trip out to the park and take a walk, hand in hand.  Take along a picnic basket and have a quiet lunch under a tree.  You could even take a day off work and not have to worry about a babysitter!
  • Keep an eye out for low-cost, or even free music events.  Universities often have great opportunities to enjoy live music.

The important part is showing your loved one how much they mean to you. Be creative and put some thought into it, make the evening different than a typical evening.  It doesn’t have to be expensive, it only has to be meaningful.

Have you tried something that wowed in the past? Post in the comments!

Grocery Stores Using Receipts for Recall Info

Customer loyalty cards have become a staple of nearly every thrifty shopper these days. The initial intent of these cards for stores was to gather information for sales and marketing. Recent difficulties, such as the peanut butter recall that resulted in 550 illnesses and 8 deaths, have made stores re-think how they can use consumer purchasing info.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Cincinnati-based Kroger is going to start tying in customer purchase histories, loyalty cards, and receipts to alert customers when a product they have purchased is recalled.  Costco is going a step further and placing phone calls to buyers of recalled products.

It is likely that many other chains will follow suit.  Some are currently using signs, but a more direct approach could alert consumers faster and prevent deaths and illnesses in another situation like we recently experienced.

Small Change Adds Up: Frugal Hobby

A family of four in Staten Island keeps an eye glued to the ground as they walk about New York City.  They are looking for coins that fall out of people’s pockets.  Other people simply step over these coins, the Humpherys pick up these coins and blog about it.

So far this year, they have found $55.09.  In their first three years they accumulated over $1000.  It is simply amazing how quickly loose change can add up.

35% Discount on Entertainment Book

You can currently buy the 2009 Entertainment Book at 35% off.  That puts the purchase price around $20 (depending on the area it is for).

For those unfamiliar with Entertainment Book, it is a coupon book full of deals for restaurants and entertainment venues.  Most of these are buy one get one free deals, but you will find a wide variety of discounts throughout the book.  The places where the discounts are available vary from popular to places you’ve never heard of.  We have purchased the book for the last four years or so and have found it to be well worth the money.  A couple buy one get one free deals at a restaurant and you have your money back!
